Ingredient intelligence
Explanations, not verdicts.
Most ingredient apps sort chemicals into good and bad. That is not how cosmetic formulation works. The same substance can be a routine emulsifier at one concentration and a restricted one above a threshold, and a rule that applies in the EU may not apply elsewhere.
So BeautySignal separates four different things: what an ingredient is, what it does in a formula, what a regulator has actually said about it, and what we think is worth telling you. Only the last of those is editorial, and every line of it comes with the reason it is there.
Where we don't know something, it says so. A gap in our data is not a finding about the product.
- Declared fragrance allergen
EU labelling rules require certain fragrance substances to be named individually above a threshold. Their presence is a labelling fact, not a prediction that anybody will react.
- Contains parabens
Permitted in the EU within concentration limits set by the Cosmetics Regulation — and some individual parabens are prohibited. We tell you which, rather than saying "dangerous".
- Contains fragrance
One of the more common causes of contact irritation, and the single most common thing people ask to filter on.
- Ingredient list not available
We would rather say we don't hold the data than leave a blank space that looks like a clean bill of health.
The database
We build it, and we show our working.
BeautySignal is not a front end for someone else's barcode API. Every scan is answered from our own catalogue, which we normalise, check and correct ourselves.
Every fact in it records where it came from and under what licence. Where we use an openly licensed source, we say so and credit it on the product page. Where a source's licence means its records have to stay separable from ours, they are — technically, not just as a promise.
When you scan something we don't have, that becomes the next thing we add.

Privacy
Your scan history is yours.
Private by construction
Scan history is readable only by the account that made it. Our own staff hold no database permission to read it — that is enforced in PostgreSQL, not by a policy document.

We measure how many products get scanned and which ones are missing, so we know what to add. We don't build a profile of you and we don't sell anything to anyone.

Export what we hold, or delete the account outright. Your history stays readable even if you stop subscribing — we're not holding it hostage.

Reasonable things to ask
Does BeautySignal tell me if a product is safe?
No, and you should be sceptical of anything that claims to. We give you information about what is in a product — what each ingredient does and what regulators have said about it — so you can make your own decision. We don't diagnose anything and we don't give medical advice.
Why isn't there a score out of 100?
Because we can't defend one. A single number would imply a judgement about safety that the underlying data doesn't support, and the honest version of that number would mostly measure how complete our data is. We show named dimensions instead, so you can see exactly what was measured.
What if you don't have the product I scanned?
You'll be told plainly, it won't cost you one of your free analyses, and you can send us the packaging if you'd like to help. Unknown scans are how we decide what to add next.
Where does your data come from?
Our own editorial work, openly licensed regulatory sources such as the European Commission's ingredient reference, and — clearly marked and separately licensed — open community datasets. Every product page credits the sources behind it.
What happens to my free analyses if I don't subscribe?
You keep your account, your history stays readable, and you can still search. You just can't run new analyses until you subscribe.
