Questions

Frequently asked

What it does

Does BeautySignal tell me if a product is safe?

No, and be sceptical of anything that claims to. We tell you what is in a product, what each ingredient does, and what regulators have said about it. Whether that suits you is your call, and for a health concern it is a pharmacist's or doctor's.

Why isn't there a score out of 100?

Because we can't defend one. A single number implies a judgement about safety the underlying data doesn't support, and the honest version of that number would mostly measure how complete our own data is. We show named dimensions instead, so you can see exactly what was measured.

Is there AI behind the analysis?

No. The analysis is a deterministic rules engine over structured data. The same product always gives the same answer, nothing is invented, and a scan costs a database query rather than a model call — which is a large part of why it can be €1.99 a month.

Coverage

What if you don't have the product I scanned?

You'll be told plainly, it won't cost one of your free analyses, and you can send us the packaging if you'd like to help. Unknown scans are the main thing that decides what we add next.

Why is some information marked unverified?

Because it is. A record imported from an open dataset and never checked by a person says 'likely match'; one checked against a photograph of the pack says so too. Pretending everything is equally reliable would be the dishonest option.

An ingredient list here is wrong. What do I do?

Use the report link on the product page. Corrections go to a reviewer and never overwrite a record directly — including ours.

Account and billing

Why do I need an account to scan?

Because the free allowance and the subscription need a reliable identity, and because your scan history needs somewhere to live that is yours. Product and ingredient pages are public and need no account at all.

What happens to my history if I don't subscribe?

It stays. You can read everything you have already looked at, and search still works. You just can't run new analyses.

Can I delete everything?

Yes, from Account settings. It removes your account, your history, your saved products and the link between you and anything you submitted.

Privacy

Can BeautySignal staff see what I scanned?

No. Scan history is readable only by the account that made it, enforced by row-level security in PostgreSQL. Staff hold no database permission that would let them read it — it is not a matter of us promising not to look.

Do you sell data?

No. There are no advertising cookies, no third-party trackers and no analytics service receiving your scans. We count things in aggregate so we know what to add.
